After two days of intense competition marked by sweat, precision, and unwavering dedication, the 2026 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Drill Competition concluded at the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO) Parade Ground in Salima on Wednesday, 2nd July. For the second consecutive year, 9 Malawi Rifles emerged champions, proudly securing back-to-back victories after also clinching the coveted title in the 2025 edition, thereby reaffirming their dominance in drill excellence.
The teams showcased exceptional foot drill, arms drill, and synchronised movements that reflected the highest standards of discipline and flawless execution of commands under pressure.
The defending champions, 9 Malawi Rifles, walked away with a grand prize of K8,000,000 and the championship trophy, while 11 Malawi Rifles claimed the runners-up position with K6,000,000. The Malawi Navy secured third place, earning K4,000,000. In the individual awards category, Captain Cosmas Phiri of 11 Malawi Rifles was voted Best Parade Commander and received K500,000. Warrant Officer Class Two Austin Muhalu of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) Regiment was recognized as Best Parade Company Sergeant Major (CSM), taking home K300,000. Second Lieutenant Collins Phiri of the Armour Battalion was named Best Parade Subaltern and awarded K250,000.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Major General Lackson Phiri, Commander, Malawi Army, highlighted the importance of drill in instilling teamwork, punctuality, and discipline. He praised the soldiers for their exemplary conduct and congratulated award winners, noting that the competition strengthens unity and readiness within the force.
“The drill competition reflects the heartbeat of our profession. It sharpens our readiness, reinforces our unity, and strengthens our esprit de corps,” said the Army Commander.
The MDF Drill Competition is an annual event of discipline, precision, and teamwork, where units from across the force demonstrate the highest standards of military bearing and spirit.
