Malawi and Mozambique have been urged to intensify security measures along their borders in order to proactively combat the emerging threats that both countries continue to face.
The message was delivered by Malawi’s Minister of Defence, Monica Chang’anamuno, during the sixteenth Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) between Mozambique and Malawi, which was held on 30th June 2025 in Maputo, Mozambique.
The Malawian delegation to the JPCDS was led by the Minister of Defence, Honourable Monica Chang’anamuno, accompanied by the Principal Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. James Chiusiwa. The Mozambican delegation was led by the country’s Minister of Defence, Honourable Cristóvão Chume, who co-chaired the meeting.
The meeting saw delegates from both countries engage in in-depth and candid discussions, reviewing progress in the implementation of joint security strategies along their shared borders and exploring new areas of bilateral cooperation for the benefit of Malawi and Mozambique.
Speaking during the meeting, Minister Chang’anamuno urged delegates to intensify joint operations and the exchange of information in order to curb cross-border threats to both countries.
“Transnational crimes such as smuggling, illegal trading in wildlife and forestry products, and human and drug trafficking continue to pose threat to both countries,” she said.
On his part, Mozambican Minister of Defence, Honourable Cristóvão Chume, said his country is on the right track in mitigating security challenges that arise from porous border entry points. He expressed appreciation for the unwavering commitment and support rendered by the Government and people of Malawi in helping his government minimize the security challenges the country continues to face.
The two were accompanied by Permanent Secretaries, Ambassadors from both countries, and other senior government officials.
