MALAWI AND SOUTH AFRICA STRENGTHEN DEFENCE COOPERATION THROUGH JOINT DEFENCE COMMITTEE

A high level Joint Defence Committee Meeting between Malawi and South Africa was held in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa from 13 to 14 May 2025. Malawi delegation was led by Mr James Chiusiwa, the Principal Secretary for Defence who was accompanied by General Paul Valentino Phiri, MSM, psc, ndc, PhD, the Commander, Malawi Defence Force (MDF). The South African delegation was led by Dr Thobekile Gamede, the Acting Principal Secretary for the Department of Defence who was also accompanied by Lieutenant General Michael Ramatswana, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief of Staff.

Speaking during the meeting Dr Gamede stated that, “the session of the Joint Defence Committee between Malawi and South Africa not only highlights the steadfast bond that has developed between our two nations, but also emphasizes our collective dedication to promoting peace, enhancing security, and achieving mutual prosperity.” On his part, Mr Chiusiwa said that, “in an era marked by complex and evolving security threats—ranging from transnational crime, terrorism, cyber threats, and regional instability—the unity of purpose between Malawi and South Africa is not just beneficial but imperative.”

General Paul Valentino Phiri highlighted the significance of the meeting in fostering stronger defence ties between Malawi and South Africa. To that end he said that, “This engagement underscores our shared commitment to regional security and stability. By collaborating in training and peace support operations, we enhance our collective ability to address common challenges." In his response, Lieutenant General Rawatswana echoed General Phiri’s sentiments and emphasized on the value of sustained partnership. "South Africa and Malawi have a long-standing history of cooperation in defence matters. This meeting has further solidified our joint efforts in advancing peace and security in the Southern African region."

The successful conclusion of the Joint Defence Committee meeting marked another milestone in the defence relations between Malawi and South Africa. Both delegations expressed optimism for future collaborations that will contribute to the professionalism and effectiveness of their armed forces, in line with their mandate to safeguard national interests and regional security.
