The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has welcomed the return of its AS550 A2 Fennec helicopter following a comprehensive overhaul by Airbus in South Africa. The aircraft rejoins the Malawi Air Force's operational fleet as a versatile multi-role platform, enhancing existing air support capabilities and operational flexibility.
AS550 A2 Fennec helicopter was officially received at Lilongwe Air Base on Monday, 26 October 2026, marking an important addition to the Defence Force's air mobility, surveillance, and rapid response capabilities. Its return comes at a time when demand for timely and flexible air support remains high across the country.
The Fennec is one of several aircraft supporting military and national operations, providing valuable capability in troop and equipment transportation, aerial reconnaissance, disaster response, and access to hard-to-reach communities.
Speaking during the reception ceremony, General George Alexander Jaffu (Jnr), Chief of Defence Force, described the aircraft as a versatile multi-role platform and force multiplier that complements the Malawi Air Force's broader operational capabilities.
“The Fennec is a workhorse. It enables us to move people and equipment quickly, reach communities that roads cannot reach in time, and provide our commanders with the aerial awareness they need to make sound decisions,” said General Jaffu. “Having it back in the air makes us stronger and more useful to the nation.”
General Jaffu said the aircraft's return bolsters the MDF's operational readiness and enhances its ability to respond swiftly to emergencies, security challenges, and humanitarian situations.
He also expressed appreciation to His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi and Commander-in-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force, for supporting efforts to maintain the military's fleet and ensure the continued airworthiness of its platforms.
“On behalf of the men and women of the Malawi Defence Force, I thank the President for his steadfast commitment to ensuring that our platforms remain airworthy,” he said. “An overhaul of this kind requires significant resources, planning, and political commitment. The return of this aircraft demonstrates that commitment in action.”
The reintroduction of the Fennec helicopter further enhances the Malawi Air Force's ability to conduct both military and civilian support missions, complementing existing air assets and providing greater operational flexibility. Its restoration reflects the MDF's continued investment in maintaining a capable, responsive, and mission-ready force in support of national security and public service.
